Didn't set an alarm, so we slept in a little later, around 10 today. Breakfast at the hotel was over, so we made some plans to eat elsewhere. A lot of the places we wanted to try were closed, but we went to a place called Sunrise Grill and the owner greeted me while I was wearing my Nebraska shirt and told us that he had lived in Omaha for 5 years. He also said that they had just stopped serving breakfast and pointed us down the road to Cimboco. (Cayman Island Motor Boat Company, named after the first motorized boat on the island) We dug it. Good menu, local fare. We got a fresh fruit plate with watermelon, cantaloupe, star fruit, honeydew, and orange. So good. Juicy, fresh. We also got a hash with eggs. Mmmm...
We
went south to Georgetown and hit the National Museum. It was a two
story house converted into a gift shop and small museum. Watched a
good, informative movie about the island, people, and history. The
museum was so-so, but we had a good time.
After
that we went to the Royal Caymanian hotel and rented some wave
runners to go out to Stingray City. We met our guide Leon, and took
off. Got up to 41 mph racing across the ocean waves. We arrived at
Stingray City, an area in the ocean where it was only 3 feet deep and
dozens of stingrays come daily and swim around humans and get fed and
let you touch them. We touched, petted, fed, and held several of
them. It was sooo cool. We kissed them, swam with them, took some
GoPro videos with them and had an amazing experience.
We
left and headed to Rum Point to relax for a bit, then drove our wave
runners to Starfish Point, where we located, picked up and held some
starfish. They're much more rigid than I expected, and if you wait
long enough, they'll bend themselves around things like your finger
and such. After that, we raced each other back across the sea,
reaching 52 mph where the wave runner topped out. It was saweeet!
Went
back to the hotel and took showers, realized I probably broke my
camera because it had gotten wet in the waverunner storage space, but
we'll see...hope not. The battery isn't charging, so maybe it's just
that. I got some rice I'll try to put it in, we'll see. :(
Rachel's
friend from the bar, Danya canceled our dinner plans with her at her
house, but we showered, got ready, and went to a place called Caymana
Bay to have dinner and watch the Christmas boat show. There were lots
of boats with Christmas lights on them, sort of a boat parade, and
they had fireworks as well.
We
had dinner at Michael's...amazing. We had grilled octopus, snapper
ceviche, deviled eggs, and a cheese plate to start. For entrees we
had pork shoulder with grits and callaloo, which is like spinach.
Dessert was “pie in a jar”, a chocolate peppermint pie in a jar
with egg nog ice cream, cranberry sorbet, and gingerbread ice cream.
Everything was amazing. Oh, by the way, it's 2-18 degrees in Omaha
and it's 79-84 here. This day has been amazing!
We
made it through the traffic pretty quick, even though there were a
lot of people there, we went back to the hotel, shared our other
Cuban cigar, and had a nightcap talking to Colin and Ms. Kimolyn
before retiring to bed. Fell asleep to SNL and found out Nelson
Mandela died today. Great day, except for that loss, but he had an
amazing life.
